Claude Brought Back Fable 5. Here's What Actually Changed.
For almost three weeks, Anthropic's most powerful public model just vanished. If you built anything on it, you felt that. The good news: Claude Fable 5 is back.
Here's what happened, what's different now, and whether you can actually use it.
[!TIP]TL;DR — Fable 5 returned globally on July 1 after the US lifted export controls. It's back with a tighter cybersecurity filter, and Pro/Max/Team plans get it included through July 7.
Why It Disappeared
On June 12, the US government slapped export controls on Fable 5 and its sibling, Mythos 5. The rule cut off access for any foreign national, and Anthropic had no way to check nationality in real time. So they pulled both models for everyone.
The trigger was a jailbreak. Amazon researchers found a prompt that got Fable to flag software flaws and, in one case, write code to exploit one. Anthropic argued weaker models could do the same thing. The Commerce Department eventually agreed and lifted the controls on June 30.
What's Different Now
Fable 5 came back with a new safety classifier. It blocks that specific jailbreak in over 99% of tries. Flagged requests get quietly rerouted to Opus 4.8, and you get told.
The trade-off? More false alarms. Fable was already cautious. Now it's even more so. If you do a lot of security or debugging work, expect the occasional annoying reroute.
Can You Actually Use It?
It's live on Claude.ai, the Claude Platform, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork. Pro, Max, and Team plans get it included for up to half their weekly limit through July 7, then it moves to usage credits.
My honest take: the model is worth it. Stripe reportedly ran a migration on a 50-million-line codebase in a day. That's the kind of thing that makes the drama feel worth sitting through.
Wrapping Up
Fable 5 is back, just with a shorter leash and a smaller free window. Grab it before July 7 if you want to test it cheap. The bigger story is how model launches now look more like negotiations with governments than product drops.
